FAQs

cake in the shape of a vase covered in sugar paste with handmade sugar irises

  • What do you use to cover the cake under the sugar paste? Any cake that is covered in sugar paste will have a covering of chocolate ganache under the sugar paste. This gives me a nice firm base to ensure that the final finish on the cake is as smooth and sharp as possible.

  • Why do you use sugar paste instead of fondant? Sugar paste is often referred to as fondant. When fondant is being referred to as a ready to roll icing (rather than the soft fondant centre of a Creme Egg) it is the same as sugar paste.

  • Can you make my cake if I have allergies? I bake and decorate all of my cakes and create all of my sugar flowers in my home kitchen. This is an environment where all allergens including nuts, gluten, wheat, dairy, eggs and soya are present. Due to potential cross contamination everything produced in my kitchen may contain allergens even if they are not used as an ingredient in your cake. I will ask you about allergens when you make your initial enquiry as a result of this I may not be able to make your cake.

  • Do you have a minimum order? When you order cupcakes there is an minimum order of 12 cupcakes. My smallest individual cake is a 4 inch round cake, this is enough for 6 desert portions (2 inch x 1 inch) or 9 finger portions (1 inch x 1 inch).

  • How far in advance do I need to book my cake? You should book your cake as far in advance as possible. You do not need to finalise the exact design or number of servings if you are booking with lots of notice as we can work out the details later, but you should secure the date with me as soon as you can. I can sometimes accommodate short notice bookings but only if I can fit them in without compromising cakes already booked as I give each cake my full attention.

  • I do not want cake or sugar flowers can I order anything else? Yes! I can offer decorated brownies, brownie stacks, decorated chocolate eggs and cakesicles. If you have any other ideas get in touch and we chat about them.

  • Can you put my favourite cartoon character on my cake? It will depend on the character. Most characters from cartoons, films and TV are covered by copyright which means that I cannot make anything in their likeness. There are some that are no longer covered by copyright where it might be possible so it is worth asking and I can check for you (this also applies to other images covered by copyright e.g. logos). I will not make anything covered by copyright law.

  • What sorts of occasions can you design a cake for? I can design a cake for any occasion or for no occasion if you just want to treat yourself!

  • How should I store my cake? I will provide you will full storage instructions with your cake. I do not use high risk fillings such as cream so your cake will not need to be stored in the fridge. You should leave your the cake in the box it is supplied in and leave it in a cool dark place. Your cake should be stored out of direct sunlight and away from heat. I will provide full care and cutting instructions with your cake.

  • How much cake do I need for my guests? We can discuss the size of cake you need and the size of portion you will be serving. Desert portions are 2 inch x 1 inch and finger portions are 1 inch x 1 inch. As a guide based on desert portions: 6 inch round will serve 12 people, 8 inch round will serve 22 people – I will provide you with a cutting guide for your cake.

Do not base your design ideas around the size of cake you think you need. We can chat about this in detail but there are ways for your cake to be larger or smaller that then number of portions you think you need to enable you to have the look you would like and still have the correct number of portions.

  • Can you deliver my cake? Yes. You can collect single tier cakes, cupcakes and sweet treats, but I can deliver these for you. I would recommend that I deliver any cakes of two or more tiers to your venue to reduce the risk of damage during transport. Some designs may need to be assembled at your venue, I will deliver your cake and finish the assembly when this is needed.

  • My event isn’t in Cambridge, UK can you still design and make my cake? Yes just let me know where your event will be in your initial enquiry and I’ll be able to let you know if the style of cake you would like will travel well and if it’s an area I can deliver to.

  • Can sugar flowers be posted to me? Yes, some flowers are more fragile that others when posted but we can chat about this as part of your initial enquiry.
  • Can I have real flowers on my cake? I do not use fresh or dried flowers on my cakes, I also do not use artificial flowers. Creating sugar flowers is a passion of mine so I have taken the decision to only use sugar flowers on cakes that I design.
